Having to flee because of your LGBTQI identity

Some people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender have to flee from their home country because of being persecuted for who they are and/or who they love. They must restart their life in a foreign country, possibly in poverty and without speaking the native language. So, by escaping one risk in their home country they are exposed to another in their asylum country.
In 72 countries of the world being a member of the LGBT community is criminalized. In eight of these countries it is punishable by death. In some countries the law is not officially against LGBTQ people but because of social norms or traditions it is not easy to live in peace and safety for LGBTQ individuals.
The UN Geneva Convention says that sexual orientation and gender identity are reasons to seek asylum and claim refugee status. In addition to that, the EU Directive says that sexual orientation is a category for which people might be at risk for persecution. In the last years many refugees arrived in Europe to seek asylum.
LGBTQ refugees need help, but their specific problems and issues have not been well identified yet. Since LGBTQ refugees often have bad experience with speaking openly about their sexual orientation they people often chose not to disclose their sexual orientation. Moreover, for the asylum seekers the arrival in Europe is not the end of discrimination. It is important that Europe should represent peace, collaboration and solidarity and should detect the special needs of LGBT individuals.
