Sexual health of gay and bi cis women
Just like for heterosexual women, sexual and reproductive health is an important factor of personal health and wellbeing for lesbian and bisexual women.
Some people think that practicing safer sex is not necessary when two women have sex, or
that it is only important when you have sex with many different people. However, that is incorrect. Safer sex is just as important for women who have sex with women as it is for anyone else. It can significantly lower your chances of contracting an STD (sexually transmittable disease). Some of the diseases that you can get are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HPV, Herpes, Syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and C etc. But there are ways that you can have sex much safer and lower your chances of contracting an STD.
The first thing you can do is using STD protection correctly and consistently (i.e. always). Possible ways to do that are by using dental dams, or simply cutting open a condom and using it instead of a dental dam. Using lube can also reduce your chances of getting an STD.
Also remember to always wash your hands before and after sex.
Being sexually monogamous also lowers your chances of contracting an STD, as does getting tested and having your sexual partner get tested for STDs regularly.
Additionally, you can get vaccines for two common STDs, HPV and Hepatitis B.
Doing all of these things are not a 100% guarantee that you won’t get an STD, but they do lower the chances significantly.
