LGBTQ* rights in Germany
This is a list of German laws specifically referring to people of the LGBTQ community. There are other German laws that might concern LGBTQ people indirectly.
General:
• Discrimination at the workplace or in the provision of goods and services based on gender identity or sexual orientation is illegal in Germany. x
Homosexual/Bisexual people:
• Since October 1st, 2017, same sex couples can marry in Germany. x
• Bisexual and Homosexual cis men can only donate blood if they have not had sex in the last year. x
• Non-straight people can openly work in the military.
• Homosexual couples can adopt and foster children in Germany. x x
Transgender people:
• Health insurance in Germany is required to pay for sexual reassignment therapy, under certain stipulations. x
Intersex people:
• Intersex people can choose the gender marker “divers” in Germany and thus do not have to chose either male or female gender. x
• Gender markers can be left blank for newborns whose sexual characteristics do not completely conform with either male or female characteristics. x
