LGTBQI refugees come from many different regions of the world.
Being here for the first time may be confusing at first, especially if you are from a different cultural background. Here is a short first-step guide if you feel confused.
Because of trauma caused by difficulties people have faced in their origin country, the strain of flight, difficulties of resettling in a new country and many other factors, many LGBTQI refugees struggle with mental health problems such as PTSD, depression, substance abuse or anxiety.
Some people who identify as LGBTQI have to flee their home country. They must restart their life in a foreign country, possibly in poverty and without speaking the native language. By escaping one risk in their home country they are exposed to another in their asylum country.
